The organisation 9/11Truth currently has around 5000 dedicated members in the USA. They have scant opportunity to disseminate their opinions through the American mass media and therefore represent a tiny fraction of American political society. The organisation sponsored two polls in order to ascertain just how widespread their viewpoints were. Zogby International conducted the first one between the 24th and the 26th of August 2004 in the New York state area. 808 randomly selected people were interviewed. The results indicated that 52 percent agreed that they had been ”intentionally misled” before the start of the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. 36 percent believed that the 9/11 Commission had failed to answer all the important questions. 28 percent were aware that WTC 7 had collapsed and that this had not been explained or reported in the media. 41 percent believed that the Government knew in advance that the attacks were planned to take place on or around the 11th of September, and that they consciously failed to act. 56.2 percent want a new investigation into the events of 9/11 in order to answer the “unanswered questions.” A similar poll was conducted in Germany. Sponsored by Der Spiegel, the statistical bureau Forza conducted a poll in April 2003 during which 1010 people were interviewed. 19 percent of those interviewed believed that the American government may have been responsible for the September 11th attacks. Asked whether TV and other media had disseminated the whole truth concerning the attacks, 68 percent of those asked said “No”. The other survey for 9/11Truth, also conducted by Zogby International, was conducted between the 12th and the 16th of May 2006.The survey was based on a random sample of 1200 respondents from all over the USA, who were asked 81 questions. 44 percent believed the Bush administration exploited the attacks of September 11th to justify the invasion of Iraq. Just 11 percent believed that this was not the case. 42 percent believed that the American government and the 9/11 Commission concealed or refused to investigate important evidence that could contradict the official explanation for the September 11th attacks. 43 percent were unaware that Building 7 (WTC 7) had collapsed during the attacks. 38 percent of those interviewed believed the Commission should have investigated the building’s collapse. 45 percent believed that the 11th of September should be re-investigated, and should then include the issue of whether the American authorities could consciously have helped or contributed to the carrying out of the terrorist attacks. 55 percent reacted negatively towards press coverage of the unanswered questions posed by the victims’ families post 9/11. The results of the survey indicate that the American population is narrowly divided in terms of 9/11Truth’s opinions. However, the figures would suggest that around 70 million voting-age Americans do not believe the official story and would support a new investigation into the terrorist attacks in the USA.
